New Goodies

I finally had some time to work on some new jewelry pieces, so I thought I'd share. I just love pearls. They are my favorite medium! I have uploaded some, but not all of these at my Etsy site. Playing in mineral make-up.

So I have a new love in my life. I am loving mineral make-up. I love it because it's 1000X better for your skin than the pore clogging stuff I used to use. Lets face it. I will be THIRTY-FIVE just a little over a month from now. It's time to stop kidding around with my skin. LOL

Ok, so this stuff is too cool but does take a little longer to apply than typical make-up. It also requires a bit of "playing" and experimenting to learn what looks good. Karen was kind enough to be my "guinea pig" and let me experiment on her.


I know that I went a bit too heavy with the white. Don't judge me. I am learning here. ;) At the same time you gotta admit that she looks SO much better in the after picture!


It's amazing how she went from looking totally exhausted
to looking absolutely fresh and bright eyed. Having make up on even made her clothes seem more stylish! It's just too wild what a lil' make-up can do.

Happy (early) Thanksgiving

Chris won't be home for Thanksgiving. He had to leave out last night for Pennsylvania and after a week there he will be flying to San Diego. So, we had our Thanksgiving dinner yesterday.
I stuck to the staple items we have every year and didn't make some of the things I usually do. I was trying to make it doable on such short notice. LOL
We had:
turkey- of course
stuffing/dressing
sourdough roll hollowed out and stuffed with spinach dip- YUM, and sliced veggies for dipping.
mashed potatoes and gravy
corn
crescent rolls
cranberry sauce
dark chocolate fudge
peanut butter milk chocolate fudge
pumpkin pie
and two cherry cheesecakes

Seems like I'm forgetting something but, oh well.

Sweet Dreams, Dear Oreo

Oreo, A.K.A Oreosis, A.K.A Speckles.
Died:Nov. 16th, 2007

A couple of days ago we lost a dear sweet fur baby that we never expected to love.
Oreo originally belonged to one of our neighbors. When they moved away they asked us if we wanted Oreo because they weren't allowed to have pets at the new apartment.
We agreed to take him because he was such a sweet pup and was already extremely bonded to Caleb. In fact, he spent so much time here that he wouldn't go home when his owners called for him. He liked it here.

About a week into our new ownership we learned a lesson that we had forgotten. Puppies that are left alone CHEW stuff up!
Oreo was only 5 months old when we got him. It was easy to forget that he was just a pup, because I am used to pups being small fragile things. lol
The first time we went to town we came back home to a disaster. Oreo had chewed up several of my treasured belongings. I never felt so angry in all my life but I tried to understand that he was probably having a bit of separation anxiety, as well as cutting teeth.

As time passed Oreo finally outgrew the chewing and the good outweighed the bad. He was very loving and affectionate. Just the sweetest dog you could ever want. He chased off strange animals, and alerted us when someone was coming. He did what dogs do.


Sadly, a neighbor came to the house Friday evening to tell us that Oreo had been hit by a car and had died. The only comfort I have is knowing that he did not suffer. He was struck in such a way that death was instant. He never saw it coming, and he didn't lay in pain.

My heart sank because we all had really just begun to bond with him. And to make matters worse he was Caleb's dog. We expected him to be around until Caleb was 30. Now, suddenly, he's gone.
He never had a habit of getting in the street before, but there is a female dog in season and I think he got on the road trying to go get to her. Oreo was scheduled to be neutered in Dec. Too bad the vet couldn't fit him in sooner. He might still be with us today if he wasn't trying to answer the "call of nature."

Caleb and I gathered him up in his favorite blanket and laid him to rest. I know it sounds silly to some people, but I know that he knew he was extremely loved and cared for. We are saddened by the loss. We take comfort in knowing that we did everything to make his short life happy. He was bathed regularly, (he loved baths), and every day he was treated with Beggin' Strips, raw hide chews, or a Milk Bone. Not an evening went by that he wasn't made over and pampered in hugs and love.

It was a short 5 months that we had the pleasure of sharing life with Oreo. He will be sorely missed. Thanks for letting me get this out there and sharing with you these pictures of a really good boy that is gone, but not forgotten.

Fur babies really are an important part our families and their passing is just as saddening as any other death. I know that a lot of pet owners know exactly where I'm coming from and understand.

I still expect to hear him run in through the doggy door and pounce me on the couch.
I expect to be woke up by a cold nose and wet tongue licking me on the face. I will miss not seeing his eyes light up and his tail wag fiercely when asked if he wants a Milk Bone.

To say you will be sadly missed doesn't even scratch the surface of our sadness today.

Crazy, crazy, crazy.

(Sensitive topic) look away if you have a queasy tummy!

First off, has anyone ever had the flu for only 4 hours???
I went to bed at 5am- yes I know- bad me! But then I woke up at 9am sick as could be.
I had chills, and burning up all at the same time. I had (the trots), and vomiting. I was super dizzy too.

I was feeling SO sick and thought to myself NOOO please not now. No one ever wants to be sick, I know. But you know how you lay there feeling awful and just imagine how the family will turn your house upside down if you aren't well enough to keep everything cleaned up? That was me.

So, I tried to relax and asked Alex to make me a cup of pine needle tea since it's packed with vitamin C. I figured it might help boost my immune system and fight off the yuckies.
The strangest thing was that about an hour after I drank the tea I was suddenly all better. I don't know what to make of it. Did the pine needle tea cure me? Did I really only have the flu for 4 hours? How is that possible?

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth I guess, but it's very, very strange. One minute I wake sick and could feel myself getting progressively worse. Then all of a sudden it's gone and as if it never happened. Maybe there is some super short virus going around that I am not aware of? All I know is that I am glad to feel healthy again and that I am not laying in bed feeling miserable.

It's Official!

I'm published!

Yesterday I received the book that my jewelry pieces were published in. I can honestly say that I am proud of my pieces. They look every bit as good as the other designs and I think Chris is pretty proud of me. I overheard him telling some of his coworkers on the phone. LOL

This post is for Ann.
She is my stocking swap partner this year and this is my mini introductory to help her get to know me better. :)
This is going to be a bit jumbled and random as I will type what pops into my head as I go along. lol

Where to start? LOL
I've been married for 20 years, have a 19 yo. son (Alex) and a son that turns 14 on Dec. 15th. (Caleb).
I'm a SAHM.

I'm 34 years old --until Jan. 1st (sigh)

I don't sleep-much. I love scrapbooking.

Sometimes I like to crochet afghans and scarves during the winter months. It's the only time I can stand to have a "growing" blanket on me because I am super hot natured.

I drink coffee about every other day. Collect really old looking unusual wicker baskets and gourds.
My house is in the process of being decorated in all primitive and grubby/grungy style. I find that is what makes me happiest. I collect gingerbread men for Christmastime. My favorite scents are vanilla and especially cinnamon!!! YUM.

I absolutely LOVE Peggy's goat milk lotions and soaps. Right now I am totally loving her caramel lotion. -Hi Peggy!- :)

On the complete opposite side of the spectrum, I'm a bit of a girly- girl. I like my make-up and pretty hair. Although I'm not finicky about my clothes. LOL I like a plain T shirt just fine. LOL
I LOVE thrift stores SO much.

Some people might call me a pessimist, but I think of myself more as a realist.

For three weeks of every month I am the mother and the father at my house.
My husbands job keeps him away a lot. He is a supervisor for a company based out of Knoxville and has to travel all over the country. I don't mind it too much. I think it has helped me be more confident in myself in a lot of ways.

I used to spend too much time on the internet. Now I spend maybe half hour a day. lol

Bonfires and SLIM Pickin's

I love this silhouette picture that I got at the bonfire. Far left is Caleb roasting a hot dog over the fire, then there is Vivian sitting on her stump seat, and son Alex is next to her.

Caleb found the gourd he wanted. LOL

Poor Karen looks exhausted. It's partly my fault though. We sat up talking all night the night before and had been running all over town all day before we went to get the pumpkins.

I said I'd share pictures from the bonfire/weeny roast and from our trip to the pumpkin "patch", so here they are.

I know there is a real patch - somewhere, but they don't let the public go in the actual patch. You have to chose one from tarp they're laid out on.

We've had a really bad drought all year and I guess that's why there weren't many pumpkins to chose from. In the past years there were tons of pumpkins, and HUGE ones!
Hopefully things will be better next year.
I did find a few dried gourds that I wanted. Really long curly handled ones. I cleaned them up and put a couple over my kitchen cabinets. One I made into a bowl and did a simple wood-burned design on.

Still Alive

I'm still here. LOL

I had planned to post some pics. from our bonfire/weenie roast and now I have pumpkin pickin' pictures as well that I want to share. I tell ya, blink and things start to pile up! LOL

Vacation Pictures. LOTS of them! :)

Not very impressive on the outside! This wasn't the cabin that I originally reserved. The people at Black Bear cabin rentals called us the day we were to arrive and said our cabin wasn't ready and they had to put us in this other one. I wasn't happy about it but what can you do? All of the Smoky Mountains were booked solid! The cabin I originally reserved could sleep 8 people. When they traded us for this one they told us it could sleep 6. Not! It had one king bed, one queen, and one sleeper sofa. That was my biggest peeve about the trade off. Chris and I had the king, Vivian had the queen, Alex slept on the sofa bed, and Caleb just slept in the floor. His preference. I don't know how he does that! He sleeps in the floor here at home a lot too.

I wish we'd have gotten a picture of it from the side so that you can see the entire house was hanging off the side of the mountain. Only that tiny porch entrance was on solid ground. The rest of it was on stilts basically.



Loved the fireplace and that's a decent sized TV. Over there on the right is the doorway to the laundry room.

Here you can see that my hubby was a complete SLOB as soon as we arrived. Put your clothes in the bedroom? What on earth for? LOL
To the left was a recliner and to the right in the background was a full kitchen.


Master bedroom with king size bed. As you can see Chris did eventually move his clothes to the bedroom, right in the way of my next picture. LOL
This bedroom had a nice large bathroom in it, a huge walk in storage closet and a large TV.


That's Caleb standing at the table. As you can see the window has a view of the back deck.

Moving upstairs... this is the bed in the loft. It also had it's own adjoining bathroom, and TV.

This is the view from the back deck. This only gives you a tiny feel for how extremely HIGH up we were. You could drop a penny off the deck and it took a while before you heard it hit the ground. LOL




Wonder why it's called the Great Smoky Mountains? Now you know. Isn't it beautiful!!!

I zoomed in as far as I could to get this picture of the cabin across the way. It looks close but look at the first mountain picture to get a real idea of how far away it really was. I took this one because I wanted to show you how enormous this cabin was. Look at the propane tank. It looks like a tic tac sitting next to it!


There were wild turkeys that visited the cabin every day. Most days we say 4 to 6 of them at a time.


These are my guys doing their impression of the Captain Morgan commercials. Silly boys! But aren't I blessed. They are so handsome! :o)

Last but not least, Vivian and Caleb in the hot tub. The one at this cabin was a tiny/dinky thing compared to the one we had a Echota Resort, but there were many other amenities this cabin had that the other didn't that more than made up for it.

So there you have it. A small look at our vacation in the mountains. I so wish I would have had the nerve to take a picture of the steep driveway and of all the wonderful fall pumpkins, scarecrows and such. Sevierville really goes all out with their decorations, especially for autumn. It was just so HOT when we went into the city and drained me. I hope to go back next week and get pics. when it's cooler.

Just Checking In

I can't believe how fast our 3 nights and 4 days at the cabin flew by.

I gotta tell ya, the cabin was way, way, way UP in the mountains. Picture a skinny one lane rock road that goes almost straight up. Make several hairpin turns and continue going straight up to an even higher elevation. I was scared stiff. I was glad that we were in the 4WD Jeep!

Not quite ready to go home, we decided to leave the mountain, come back into the heart of the city of Pigeon Forge, and grab a motel room for one more night.

We took a drive over to Townsend so Chris could visit his favorite woodcarving store. We also stopped and ate breakfast there. It cost $60 for five of us to eat BREAKFAST! Crazy! (I forgot to mention that we let my 12 yo. neice come with us, so that's where the fifth person comes in.)

After we check out of the motel in the morning I'm going to go waste a couple hours at the HUGE scrapbook store and scrapbook clearance store over at Governer's Crossing. Can't wait. I'm hoping I will find some things that will get me excited about scrapping again. I've got so many pictures I need to scrap.

Funny, as I type this Chris is sitting at the foot of the bed carving a spoon. Alex, Caleb and Vivian are relaxing after a dip in the pool, and here I sit blogging on the laptop. I think we will be ready to be home after tonight. LOL

Headed to the Cabin

We are taking a vacation and heading to a cabin in the mountains for a few days.
Any things ordered from my shop while I am gone will be shipped the day after I return.

Since I can't sleep much at night I am bringing a project with me to work on. I'm going to make a scarf with this super pretty ribbon yarn. I've already started on it. Couldn't resist!

Tea From Pine Needles

As with anything please take what you read about this with a " grain of salt" because I am NOT claiming this all to be true. It's just what I've read and learned, so take it for what it's worth.

Have you ever heard of pine needle tea? I hadn't, but was very intrigued so I set out to learn more.

It is reportedly VERY, very good for the body when you drink tea made from pine needles. Yes, everyday ordinary pine needles. Your Christmas tree! LOL

Supposedly, one cup of pine needle tea has more vitamin C than 6 lemons! and is good for treating mild depression, strengthening the nerves in your eyes, muscle fatigue, heart ailments, kidney ailments, to treat coughs, allergies, and many other things.

I wanted to give it a try so I pulled up this recipe:
Chop up the needles..
Meantime, boil a pot of water.
Place pine in boiling water, cover, and remove from heat. Let steep from 20 minutes to all night.
What you don't drink hot, refrigerate for a cold, refreshing drink.Experiment with proportions of pine needles to water.
The best tea will be a nice reddish color, and a small amount of oil will rise to the top.

This recipe makes a beautiful red tea, with a mild, pleasant taste. You can sweeten with honey if desired.

The boys and I went out to the front yard - I live in the forest ya know! :) And we gathered some needles and made a cup. It was actually very yummy. I think we should have gotten needles that were a bit younger as ours didn't turn out exactly orange but more of a pale peach shade.
It was as good as any processed teas I've ever bought though and next time I want to chill some because I just prefer my tea cold. LOL It was positively good enough to have again and if even one of those health benefits is true then all the better. It's just too bad that it doesn't treat insomnia. If it did I would not be here posting in the middle of the night so often. LOL

I love learning about this kind of stuff!

Around My House

Here are a few of the things around my home at this time. Mostly my kitchen and living room anyway. I like things that are simple, no fuss. My walls are beige and garnet. Not red as they appear in the pics.
Ignore the cobwebs and dust- I do. LOL

Camouflaged Blessings

When Chris and I first started out we were very young and very poor. We had our son Alex and not much else.
We bought a piece of land that we could make payments on ($97 a month to be exact) and as we were able we started building a house. We didn't get any loans because we decided early on that we wanted to live as debt free as possible.

So, little by little we scrimped and saved and added on the the house as often as we could. We did all the work ourselves. Yes, ALL of it. We didn't have money for contracted labor.
In the meantime we had to live with my parents which wasn't always easy.
It took three long years to get the house finished and ready to be lived in.
It isn't a large house and I complain almost daily about the lack of storage space I have. lol

Living debt free means never having a brand new car.
Sometimes I'd see someone I went to school with driving a shiny new car and wonder why they were so lucky and I wasn't. All the while not taking into consideration that I had something they didn't. A car that I bought outright with no payments. Sure it might have been a few years older but it always got me where I needed to go and when it broke down I just go buy another car.

Groceries in our house were a luxury too, at first. We never had a fully stocked pantry. We never starved but lived on one meal a day to make the food last longer most times.

Fast forward to now and so many things have changed. Chris has a great job. I am able to be a stay at home mom and homeschool my kids. I still don't have a brand new car but the cars I have now are great running and much better looking, newer models. LOL

We have more than enough to eat and the cupboards are never bare.
All of our bills (internet, cell phones, water, electric, cable, car insurance, etc.) combined come to less than what most families pay on one months mortgage payment.
We can travel where ever and when ever the mood strikes us. We live by our own schedule.

The point of all this is that in the beginning when we were starting out and struggling, doing without a lot of wants and needs, life didn't seem to be very fair sometimes. But now in hindsight we can appreciate those struggles and times that were lean.

Those struggles and decisions laid the path for the life we have today. No it's not a glamorous life, but that's not our style anyway.
Because of those decisions we won't be paying off our home when we are in our 50's or 60's. We won't have credit card debt up to our eyeballs. We will always have a larger income to debt ratio. And now, I can see that the struggle was really a small part of the bigger picture. It now reveals the blessings that once were so camouflaged.

Thrift store shopping.

The scene:
A woman in her early 30's- ok 34! Roams the aisles wild eyed as if somewhere around the next corner she was going to discover a treasure unlike any other.
When the treasure is spotted it is scooped up swiftly and she looks around to her left and right suspiciously as she fears someone is on her heels waiting to pounce on her and take her new possession from her clutches.
The coast is clear. Now she looks over the treasure for the price and laughs merrily at the wee price. SUCKERS! She thinks to herself. Fifty cents! I would have paid at least twice that much! BWAHAHAHA

That's me! I LOVE thrift stores! I always look for rustic and primitive things. Show me a basket of buttons and a quilt and I'm tickled pink! A dried flower bouquet, a rag doll, old timey clothespins, baskets... that's what I'm after. :) And the best part is when I find something I didn't even know I loved until I saw it. swoooooon!

One of my very favorite thrift stores is operated by New Hope Church down in Sevierville, TN. All proceeds from the thrift store go to help people with drug and alcohol addictions.
Sadly it was burned to the ground by an arsonist this past June.
I will never forget it. I was sitting in a motel room and it was about 2am. I was up because I couldn't sleep- as usual. Chris was asleep next to me in the bed and I turn the tv on and started channel surfing. One channel was news and I saw a building in blazes but didn't think much about it. I almost changed the channel before I realized that the building in flames looked mighty familiar.

My heart sank as I sat on the bed watching the building being engulfed and listening to the news reporter say that it was officially determined to be arson. What makes someone want to burn down a thrift store for goodness sakes? What could be the motive? It just made no sense at all.
I was so sad.
Just a couple days prior I was there merrily shopping and making small talk with the pastor of the church and their helpers. Suddenly my last purchases really did seem more like real treasures. What if I had not bought them when I was there just two days ago? My pretties would have burned up in that fire...

The good news is that they now have a new location that was donated to the church. YAY!!
I can't wait to get back to Sevierville and stop in. The bonus of it all is that the new location is right across the street from the best scrapbook superstore in the world! One door was closed (or burned) but God opened another. :)

I'll have 2 full pages in the Jan./Feb. issue!! I can not believe it. Too cool! :O)

That's what happens when you stop. You forget!

Ever since I took a break from scrapbooking - SEVERAL months ago,- I can no longer find the time for it now that I want to do it.
How did I used to find the time? I remember the house was still getting cleaned and everyone was fed, LOL but WHERE did the time come from? I forget! I have NO idea how I fit it into my days.

I don't like change but it is inevitable and so like everything else in life, my life changed as well. It happened when I wasn't looking.
Lately I've been so busy planning home improvement lists- there is SO much that needs to be fixed around here), schooling Caleb, occasionally working on new pieces for my Etsy shop, chasing coupons for CVS deals and spending MUCH more time away from home than usual that nothing seems the same. It's kinda sad.
I know that probably doesn't make sense exactly. I guess you'll just have to take my word for it.

I guess I should try to start off by planning and setting aside one specific day for it and do nothing else! Still have no idea what day I can spare, but I'm going to try. I've got a lot of pictures that need to be a part of the story. :)
